Unifying Theory for Casimir Forces: Bulk and Surface Formulations

چکیده
The principles of the electromagnetic fluctuation-induced phenomena such as Casimir forces are well understood. However, recent experimental advances require universal and efficient methods to compute these forces. While several approaches have been proposed in literature, their connection is often not entirely clear, some them introduced purely numerical techniques. Here we present a unifying approach for force free energy that builds on both Maxwell stress tensor path integral quantization. result presented terms either bulk or surface operators describe corresponding current fluctuations. Our yields novel formula energy. within Lagrange Hamiltonian formulation yielding different expressions equivalent. We compare our previously developed scattering approach. practical application exemplified by derivation Lifshitz formula.

Casimir forces in the time domain: Theory
We present a method to compute Casimir forces in arbitrary geometries and for arbitrary materials based on the finite-difference time-domain FDTD scheme. The method involves the time evolution of electric and magnetic fields in response to a set of current sources, in a modified medium with frequency-independent conductivity. The advantage of this approach is that it allows one to exploit exist...
متن کاملSOME POINTS ON CASIMIR FORCES
Casimir forces of massive ferrnionic Dirac fields are calculated for parallel plates geometry in spatial space with dimension d and imposing bag model boundary conditions. It is shown that in the range of ma>>l where m is mass of fields quanta and a is the separation distance of the plates, it is equal to massive bosonic fields Casimir force for each degree of freedom. We argue this equalit...
متن کاملCasimir forces, surface fluctuations, and thinning of superfluid film.
Recent experiments on the wetting of 4He have shown that the film becomes thinner at the lambda transition and in the superfluid phase. The difference in thickness above and below the transition has been attributed to a Casimir interaction which is a consequence of a broken continuous symmetry in the bulk superfluid. However, the observed thinning of the film is larger than can be accounted by ...
متن کاملScreened Casimir forces
We demonstrate that a very recently obtained formula for the force on a slab in a material planar cavity based on the calculation of the vacuum Lorentz force [C. Raabe and D.-G. Welsch, Phys. Rev. A, 71, 013814 (2005)] describes a (medium) screened Casimir force and, in addition to it, a medium-assisted force. The latter force also describes the force on the cavity medium. For dilute media, it ...
